Are There Any Natural Infertility

Infertility is an inability to conceive a child
after one year of unprotected sexual life. It is also known as
Sterility. There are many causes of infertility among males &
females. These causes may be due to hormonal imbalances, lifestyle
or diet. In almost 10% of the infertility cases, there is no
obvious abnormality which explains it.

Infertility
Male
Factors:
Age (above 45yrs), obesity, fatigue, heavy
smoking, alcoholism, nervous tension about sexual performance and
psychiatric illness.
Certain diseases such as hypothyroidism,
diabetes mellitus and hypothalamic pituitary
dysfunction.
Conditions such as orchitis and vas
obstruction.
- Ignorance about sex - no
consummation of marriage, poor frequency of sexual intercourse,
severe phimosis and hydrocele.
- Defects in sperm production due
to undescended testes, hypospadias, klinefelter syndrome, small
pox, mumps, varicocele (enlarged testicular veins), and huge
hydrocele.
- Female
Factors
Age (above 35yrs), obesity, fear of sex, marital
disharmony.
- Conditions such as thyroid,
hormonal amenorrhea, irregular menstrual bleeding, and polycystic
ovarian disease.
- Narrow vaginal opening, spasms
of the vagina, vaginitis, and escape of semen after
coitus.
- Intracervical obstruction,
cervical scarring, cervicitis and cervical polyp.
- Uterine tumors may also lead to
infertility. Tubal occlusions or peritubal adhesions caused by
pyogenic tuberculosis, chlamydia and appendicitis.
- Hyperprolactinaemia, oophoritis,
cysts, ovarian tumors, premature ovarian failure or unruptured
follicles.

- Emotional disturbances such as
lack of sleep, depression.
Infertility Treatment
Conventional treatments for Female
Infertility
In the Allopathic system of
medicine, Ovulation inducing drugs are prescribed to women with
anovulation or oligoovulation. Drugs used are Clomiphine citrate,
Human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG), Gonadotrophin releasing
hormone (GnRH), Bromocryptine and Corticosteroids. These drugs may
cause side-effects such as, hot-flushes, visual blurring, abdominal
pain or bloating, Urticaria and hair loss.
Surgical treatment for Female
Infertility
- Cervical dilatation and uterine
curettage (D&C) may be useful in cases with intracervical
fibrous ring obstruction.
- Fenton's operation is resorted
to for tight hymeneal ring with vaginismus in newly married women,
where penile entry into the vagina is incomplete or
impossible.
- Myomectomy is recommended in
young women where sub mucus fibromyoma is found as the only
reason.
- Tuboplasty is performed to
remove tubal blocks.
- Cervical suture operation is
recommended in cases of repeated mid pregnancy abortions due to
cervical incompetence.
Micro surgical wedge resection on
ovaries in polycystic ovarian disease and ovarian cystectomy in
case of chocolate cysts is usually recommended.
Treatment for Male
Infertility
- For low sperm count, Clomiphene
tablets are usually prescribed to stimulate
Spermatogenesis.
- Testosterone is also prescribed,
but it has not been documented to be effective.
- Impotence due to psychosis or
use of antidepressants, hypotensives and tranquilizers is usually
corrected by controlled use of these drugs.
- In immunological infertility,
corticosteroid therapy is resorted to.
- Obstruction of Epididymus or vas
is corrected surgically in case of obstructive
azoospermia
- In case of oligozoospermia,
artificial insemination of the male partner is offered as an
option.
- Artificial insemination of
donors (AID) is advised in azoospermia or severe oligozoospermia.
This procedure may have medico legal implications.
